Dear friends, the message that Christ has come to earth is one that brings great joy. This joy is a central theme in many Bible verses, pointing to the hope his arrival ushers in.
The birth of Jesus Christ ushered in great joy for the world, as proclaimed by the angel who announced his arrival. His first coming brought salvation, changing the relationship between God and mankind forever. Though Jesus would later die for our sins, his resurrection defeated death and gives us hope. One day he will return to make all things new and wipe every tear from our eyes.
The Bible also tells what a wonderful day it will be when Jesus returns. There will be singing and shouts of joy when the Lord comes to gather his people to himself. We are instructed to live in readiness for that coming day, setting aside earthly pleasures and keeping eternity in view. Though we must wait patiently, we can rejoice in the promise that Jesus will come again.
The popular Christmas song “Joy to the World” is actually referring to Christ’s second coming even more than his first. It is drawing from verses in Psalms that sing of nature itself celebrating when the Lord comes to judge the earth in righteousness. The songwriter imagined all of creation rejoicing together when Jesus returns to make all things new, undoing all the damage done by sin.
So we see Scripture urging us to rejoice now in what Jesus has done for us, as well as rejoicing in anticipation of his return. This hope can sustain us in dark days and spur us on to share the good news with others.
Dear friends, now let’s look at some Bible verses below that talk about the joy we can have in Christ’s coming.
