Dear friends, Just as the different parts of our physical bodies are designed to work together in harmony, Scripture calls the body of Christ to spiritual unity. God gifts each of us – with our varied passions, talents and personalities – to fulfill distinct roles for the sake of serving one another.
When we walk in humility instead of pride, appreciating our own calling while valuing that of others, the body functions powerfully as one. Just as the ear hears and the eye sees on behalf of the whole body, we use our gifts to meet needs beyond ourselves. As we affirm each member’s contribution, we strengthen solidarity and foster community.
Of course, coordination never happens automatically. It requires the headship of Christ to guide us, along with muscles developed through regular exercise of our spiritual gifts. When we neglect God’s word and prayer, divisions start to separate us like ligaments pulled from joints. But when we align with Christ’s commands, submitting to one another in love, the body gains ability to work in sync through the cords of grace that bind us.
As we dwell in fellowship, rejoicing in our oneness in Christ, we demonstrate His reconciliation to the watching world. Our Savior’s deepest desire is for us to be united as His body, equipped and ready for works of service – a testimony of joints and ligaments knit firmly together by His love.
Dear friends, now let’s turn to God’s word to learn principles for how each part of Christ’s body can contribute to the health and maturity of the whole.
